Understanding the Concept of Teacher Education

And How Does Teacher Education Affect Teaching In Nigeria?

Understanding the Concept of Teacher Education

Seeking knowledge was something we did from time immemorial, and those who facilitated the knowledge, namely the teachers, are regarded with much respect and awe. But even from those times, to qualify as an instructor or teacher, one needs training specifically for the purpose of teaching others.

In today’s age, it is known as teacher education. It is also sometimes referred to as teacher training, but that is rarely used, and the phrase teacher education is more common.

Teacher education is referred to as the general advancement of teacher’s skills and knowledge, it is basically, ‘teaching teachers’ for better and quality education.

Teacher Education in Nigeria encompasses all forms of formal courses and programs that teachers have to attend to qualify as teachers. We will talk more about those later. Now, let’s find out the meaning of teacher education.

Teacher Education Definition

Teacher education is the provision of educational or teaching resources, and tools that teachers will need to work more efficiently, and the provision of policies, information, knowledge, and skills, that teachers will need to provide quality education in Nigerian schools.

Teachers’ education in Nigeria affects how education is being handed down to the next generation. If teachers are well-trained and well-taught, the education system benefits, but if the teachers lack the resources or the skills and knowledge to teach in their particular areas of study, then the education standard plummets.

Providing teachers with the required tools and training is necessary, it will bolster the teacher’s abilities, thereby indirectly bolstering the abilities of the students. In essence, the whole educational standard in a country could be transformed simply by giving attention to teachers’ education.

During training for teachers, they are introduced to resources that will be beneficial to their teaching jobs, and they are taught how to use them effectively. A teacher needs those skills, knowledge and resources to fulfill their duty as teachers.

The teacher training or teacher education could be subdivided into two main parts, one is the first set of training teachers receive to prepare them for teaching in primary or secondary school, that is also to qualify them as teachers, they get that before they start teaching in a school. This type of teacher education is associated with earning a teaching certificate such as NCE from a College of Education, or a bachelor’s degree or other forms of qualifications to qualify them as teachers in schools in Nigeria.

The other type is when they receive training while they have already become teachers, the highly recommended on-the-job training. So, educational conferences, ICT training for teachers, etc, are some examples of how the second type of teacher education is facilitated.

Teacher education can be summed up to mean training for teachers, both formal and informal, carried out by governments or schools for the teachers to improve.

What Are The Objectives Of Teacher Education

The main function of teacher education is at first sight, for the teacher’s benefit, but the whole educational sector benefits from it, because trained and well-informed teachers equal quality education.

Education is the bedrock of our society, without it, we will not have modern blue-collar or white-collar jobs, because they are all taught at schools. So, education is the main driver of the economy since it influences the work we do and how we behave in society.

All of that is put in mind when teachers are being trained, they are supported in their skills, knowledge and their behaviors, to get the best out of every teacher at school.

Here are some of the main objectives of teacher education:

  • To re-enforce the teaching structure

By providing the necessary training needed to use and implement educational technology fully by the teachers. These include resources and tools such as laptops, printable materials, lesson guides and so on, that need to be used by a teacher if they are to become effective in the classroom.

  • To revise educational policies

Policies are revamped and upgraded because teacher education is also about improving the teacher’s skills and updating their knowledge about things, so that they can be of relevance in the real world. And so that, the educational system is not left behind when it comes to the latest developments such as 5G network, internet of things (IoT), virtual and augmented reality, etc.

All of these and more are included to fit new curriculums so that students can get the best value for education.

In case you are wondering, revision of textbooks are also a direct result of the effects of teacher education, educationists come together every once in a while to contribute and add things of relevance or remove those of irrelevance from a textbook, they revise it because updating policies and knowledge is part of teacher education.

  • To increase the standard of education

The standard of education in Nigeria is affected positively by improvements in teacher education. With teachers being given the right tools and training, their experience and knowledge will be used to further education in Nigeria. Their knowledge will match modern times, and their students will be taught and supported by professional teachers.

For most developed countries, this is what they have been doing differently to make their standard of education very sound, they had a great teacher education policy.

  • To develop teacher’s attitudes

One of the main objectives of teacher education is to help the teachers develop their behavioral faculties to align with the task of teaching a child.

They learn proper attitudes and behaviors because they have to disseminate the same to their students. Teaching jobs are exhausting and create high-stress levels if a person is not well prepared for it, teacher education is there to make sure that teachers are prepared psychologically.

How Does Teacher Education Work?

Teachers in Nigeria are required to join and finish some education programs before they qualify as teachers in schools.

These are formal programs or courses meant for people who are going to become professional teachers. The teacher education is carried out at Colleges of Education or at a National Teachers Institute (NTI), or at universities offering ‘education courses’ in particular fields, e.g. physics education, chemistry education, etc.

When they are through they are issued certificates for completion of the courses and qualification. Teaching qualifications include the NCE and a Bachelor’s degree in education.

In summary, teacher education is any means used to provide teacher training, which involves getting formal certifications and on-the-job training. Teachers are role models in society, improving their skills and performance is a way to develop our society.
