Teaching and Learning with Technology, IMPACTFUL?!

According to the Long man dictionary of contemporary English, TECHNOLOGY can be defined as the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation of new machines and equipment’s and use of technical means and interrelation with life, society and the environment. Technology has made several life changing innovations and solutions and one of such is it’s impact on teaching and learning. Technology has greatly affected the way things are presented and taught in the classroom.

Technology has created an easier way of dealing with things in the classroom. It is easy for teachers to rely and depend on technology, for example, it is comfortable for a teacher to sit down and type a subject content or assignment on a computer rather than to write it on a whiteboard and it is also easier for the students to go online and get Information about their assignments and also get their subject notes.

Technology has made available supplemental and important teaching tools. Gadgets like projectors, tablets and interactive whiteboards are learning tools which technology have provided for students to learn. Most teachers who were assessed by a technological organization expressed a positive opinion of educational technology, testifying that technology assists them in emphasizing and expanding on contents of their subjects. For example, after some years of teaching the same topics in most subjects like chemistry, physics etc. It can be challenging to keep students engaged and for them to show interest as you are presenting and explaining the topics, but with the help of technological learning tools, it is now simple to keep students actively engaged in lessons as well as a means to keep topics and subject contents fresh and understandable.

Technology has motivated the students to learn efficiently. Students are now much more enthused and tend to learn when they can interact with pro-active learning tools which various forms of educational technology provide. For instance,a student trying to learn Branching of Hydrocarbon Chains in Organic Chemistry would prefer to use a tablet which auto corrects him/her if a mistake is made than to learn it in chemistry class, because obviously the teacher would not have all the time to check out all the students trying out this activity and the student won’t be rest assured that he/she is correct but with the help of the pro-active learning tool, the student would feel self-assured that he/she is doing the right thing. According to the Skool Media research team, 80% of teachers who were surveyed responded that using classroom technology allows students to take greater control of their education because technological learning tools encourage practical and pro-active learning.

Technology has assisted students to learn at their own pace. Not all students learn at the same rate. We have the categories of fast learners, slow learners and those who are in-between. One important impact of technology on teaching and learning is that every student gets to learn at his/her own pace. A student might be slow in learning mathematics in a large classroom but with advanced technological tools like laptops, tablets and interactive whiteboards etc. the students would learn at a pace which is very comfortable for him/her. A Nigerian teacher was quoted in the punch newspaper saying ‘‘Technology is the ultimate lynchpin for students, it is the best learning source for students, it makes them excited about coming to school.’’ There are many ways that incorporating technology into the classroom can help most students learn at a rate that is comfortable for them and that allows them to retain information.

Technology has aided and encouraged learning and teaching and it has reduced stress for both students and teachers and I believe that the impact of technology on teaching and learning are advantageous and they would perfect teaching and learning in schools and colleges.
